Motorcycle parts aren’t exactly easy to shop for. In fact, it can take quite a bit of time and research to try and figure out which components are right for the job, and which versions are compatible with your model. While we can’t tell you which parts are required for your specific repair or installation, we can provide some helpful insight on whether you need an OEM or aftermarket accessory.

Key Differences

While OEM and aftermarket parts may look similar on store shelves, these two components couldn’t be more different. For starters, these parts are manufactured in completely different ways. For example, OEM parts are produced with high-quality materials and practices and, as a result, are much more durable but take much longer to make. On the alternate end of the spectrum are aftermarket parts. These components are produced very quickly to fit into a wide array of motorcycle makes and models. While this lowers the overall price and makes them easier to find, they can potentially lower the performance of your vehicle.

Which Should You Choose

If there is an OEM part available for your motorcycle’s specific make and model, we encourage you to snatch it up as quickly as you can. While OEM parts are much higher quality than aftermarket components, it can be tricky finding the right one for your model. As a result, it's common for motorcycle owners to purchase an aftermarket part until they can locate or order the correct OEM component. However, if your motorcycle is still under warranty, you’ll need to avoid aftermarket parts completely. If one is installed by you or a mechanic, you may breach the terms of your warranty contract and lose your coverage.
